It’s officially Fall and we’re so excited! It has been so hot here in Kansas City so we decided to make fall cookies to make it feel more like fall. However, because we usually do cut out sugar cookies during the winter holidays, it felt more like Christmas when we made these today. Ella was also wearing christmas footie pajamas as we were baking, so the Christmas feelings just kept on flowing.
The whole time we made these cookies, we talked about what our future blog posts would be about. I can tell you we have a lot of fun things planned! But you’ll just have to keep tuning in to see.
Our favorite thing about making these cookies was getting to see the dough come from one color into little bits of random colors and then to all the colors swirled together (check out TheAboutWhatBlog instagram to see the fun pictures of the process). It was so cool.
If you plan on making these cookies we have one suggestion. When rolling the dough out make sure to add flour frequently to the board and rolling pin…we learned this the hard way. If you do not add flour frequently the dough will stick to the cutting board or rolling pin. If it sticks to the cutting board or rolling pin you will have to roll it again until you get it right and, if you roll it a bunch you will lose the color and just end up with plain orange (sorry for that If You Give a Mouse a Cookie book there).
At the end of each recipe post we will do a review at the bottom of the page. It will tell you what we think the level of difficulty is (easy, medium, or hard – keep in mind we’re kids), how we think it tastes, and how we think it looks. We had a lot of fun making these cookies and here are our conclusions…
Level of difficulty: medium
Taste: I think it tastes pretty good. I really like the sweet taste and it was a little salty but i still loved it.
Looks: I love the way the look on these turned out. I plan on doing this type of cookie again but with different colors of food dye and will maybe pipe some frosting on them.
Level of difficulty: medium
Taste: I think the cookies were great. It was a lot of fun and I hope to make them again.
Looks: I think that these pumpkin cookies looked very pretty.
We found this recipe for the Fall Leaves Sugar Cookies on the Land O’Lakes butter website. They made them as leaves and had almond extract in them (we used vanilla). So pretty!
- 1 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 large Land O Lakes® Egg
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- Red, orange and yellow gel food colors
- Combine butter and sugar in bowl; beat at medium speed until creamy. Add egg, milk and vanilla extract; continue beating until well mixed. Add flour and baking powder; beat at low speed until well mixed.
- Divide dough into thirds; place each portion into separate bowls. Add very small amount of red gel food color to 1 portion; mix well. Add additional red gel for desired color, if necessary. Repeat with remaining dough portions and gel food colors.
- Shape each dough into ball; flatten each ball to ½-inch thickness. Wrap each in plastic food wrap; refrigerate 2-3 hours or until firm.
- Heat oven to 400°F.
- Working with half of each dough color (keeping remaining dough refrigerated), drop tablespoon-size pieces of dough from each color onto well-floured surface in random pattern with dough pieces touching. Roll out dough to ¼- to ⅛-inch thickness, forming marbled design. Cut with 3-inch pumpkin cookie cutters
- Place cookies, 1 inch apart, onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 7-9 minutes or until cookies are lightly browned. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to cooling rack.
