We love to read. Today we’re sharing reviews of our 4 favorite books from September.
We come from a family of readers. If you know our mom, you know she really loves to read. One thing that she is always more than willing to buy us is more books. Luckily for her, we go to the school library often, but when book fair time rolls around, look out. We sometimes get a little carried away!
We thought it would be fun to share a few of our favorite books we’ve read in this past month or so. If you have kids our age (10 and 12) who love to read, you might want to take note.
The Candymakers by Wendy Mass (recommended for grades 5th – 8th)
The Candymakers took place in a candy factory called life is sweet. In the book 4 kid contestants try to make the best, most unique candy to win the contest. But when the candy factory starts going down hill will the contestants work together to save the candy factory? Competition is stiff and there are a lot of lessons to be learned by each contestant in the end!
My favorite character in The Candymakers is Daisy, partly because she’s the only girl and partly because she’s the most creative. She has a really great personality!
I would recommend The Candymakers to anyone wanting a funny yet suspenseful book to read. Each character has to make a lot of choices throughout the story and there are a lot of lessons about working together and cooperation, even when competing with others.

Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier (recommended for grades 3-7)
Those of you who are fans of Smile, Sisters and Drama by Raina Telgemeir will love this graphic novel by her.
Ghosts is about a girl named Katrina who moves to a new town. In that town everyone believes in Ghosts. Katrina tries to overcome her fear of ghosts after her sister had a ghostly visit. Although this book is about ghosts, it wasn’t really that scary for me. It’s more about making new friends and overcoming fears than being scared by ghosts.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Raina Telgemeir books or graphic novels. It’s a quick and fun read.

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson (recommended for grades 7-12)
Since You’ve Been Gone is about a girl trying new things and spreading her wings. Emily was a girl who lost her best friend Sloane (by lost I don’t mean died, I mean literally lost – like couldn’t find her). One day Emily got a letter in the mail from Sloane. The letter had a list of Emily’s fears, which included things like riding a horse, skinny dipping, stealing something, buying a really pretty dress that she has always wanted,etc. If Emily completed each item on the list it would lead her to her back to her best friend Sloane.
I really liked this book because it shows people that if you face your fears something good will come out of it.

One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt (recommended for grades 4-8)
One for the Murphys is about a girl named Carley who was abused and then taken away from her family and put in a foster home. She’s not at all happy and is constantly trying to get away from her foster family to see her birth mom. When she finally sees her birth mom again she suddenly remembers how badly abusive her mom was. It makes Carley start to see her foster family in a whole new light.
This book was so good and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who likes emotional dramas.
